RACE CANCELLATION POLICY AND REFUNDS

In the event that our permission to have an in-person event is rescinded, the Harrisburg Mile will become a virtual race and we will not be able to give any refunds. You will still get your race shirt, race bag, and race bib.

As much as we would like to be considerate of our participants who may request a refund, this event requires purchasing a significant amount of supplies in advance. If the YMCA were to give refunds to all participants, this event would go from a fundraiser to a net loss of thousands of dollars for the YMCA during a time when all non-profits are struggling to continue operations.

We are giving 100% to have a safe, fun, and wonderful Harrisburg Mile event in person, but if circumstances were to change due to concerns for the safety of our community outside of our control, we will provide additional instructions for the virtual race option for all registered participants.

PACKET PICKUP

Due to extenuating circumstances this year and the limited time we have to organize this event, we will have fewer days of packet pickup but will be extending the times. We will also not have any in-person registration available.

HEAT TIMES AND ROLLING START FORMAT

  • The format for the Harrisburg Mile heat times is going to be slightly different this year.
  • We will use a rolling start format for the Open Time and all heats (except the Elite Mile, which will be limited to 30 people at will go off at 7:55pm)
  • Participants will have the option to run during their assigned age group/Corporate Challenge heat OR arrive any time during the Open Time and run.
  • Anyone who runs during the Open Time will still be eligible for an age group award, which will be all chip-timed (see Awards section)

Rolling Start Format

  • The rolling start format means that as soon as you get to the starting line, you start running.
    • This will be conducive to no one waiting around in large groups where everyone goes off at one specific time.
  • This will allow us to get everyone through the course and greatly minimize the amount of people around each other at any given time.
  • We ask that you do not get to the starting line and wait around prior to your heat, you can just walk to the starting line once your heat time begins and get started right away!
  • For example:
    • Age Group Heat: If you are in the 20-29 age group heat, you can run any time during the open time OR you can start your heat any time between 6:00-6:15pm. If you get to the starting line at 6:07pm, you can start running right away and still get an official time.
    • Corporate Challenge: If you are in one of the two Corporate Challenge heats, you can start at any time during the window for these heats OR everyone can arrive during the Open Time and get started right away.
    • Fun Run: If you are in the Fun Run heat, you can start any time during the Fun Run heat (5:00-5:45pm) or any time during the Open Time. We just ask that you finish the race by 6:00pm so you are not in the way of the 19 and Under runners.

Open Time (2:00-5:45pm)

Heat Times

*Updated 8/13 – Please see below, we were able to fit all the Corporate Challenge into one heat time, so all times after have been moved up.

  • Open Time – 2:00-5:45pm
    • Anyone registered for any age group or Corporate Challenge heat (other than the Elite Mile) can show up and run at any time during this window.
    • Please note that the Fun Run goes from 5:00-5:45pm, so if you are running to achieve a desired time, you may want to run earlier or wait until your age group heat due to the potential number of walkers and strollers that may be on the course.
  • Fun Run – Start any time between 5:00-5:45pm
  • 19 and Under – Start any time between 5:45-6:00pm
  • 20-29 – Start any time between 6:00-6:15pm
  • Corporate Challenge 1 – Start any time between 6:15-6:35pm
  • 30-39 – Start any time between 6:35-6:55pm
  • 40-49 – Start any time between 6:55-7:15pm
  • 50+ – Start any time between 7:15-7:35pm
  • Elite Heat – All in this heat start at 7:45pm

Open Time (2:00-5:45pm)

  • There will be an Open Time from 2:00-5:45pm where anyone who is registered can show up and run outside of their age group heat.
  • We will utilize a rolling start format for the Open Time and the Age Group/Corporate Challenge heats.
    • This means that as soon as you get to the starting line, you start running.
    • Participants can arrive, walk to the starting line, and begin the race immediately – but please note for some heats we may need to distance people at the start line and send them off every few seconds, so please keep your mask on until you are just about to start.
  • There will be no gathering of all participants that go off at the same time.
  • By utilizing a rolling start format, we will help get everyone through the course in a way that lets us spread out that much more.

Elite Mile

The only exception will be the Elite Mile, which will be limited to 30 participants. These participants will all start at the same time due to the size of the field. This heat will be gun-timed for awards and will go off at 7:55pm.

COURSE

Click here for a City Island Course Map

This course has been measured as a USATF certified 1-mile course! The official course map will be published as soon as it is finished processing.

Overview Map

  • The race will take place on City Island this year.
  • The start will be just in front of the FNB Fieldsteps and the finish will be in the large parking area adjacent to the Market St Bridge.
  • The final stretch of the race will take place along the perimeter of the parking lot, which will allow for extra space for spectators to spread out.
  • There will be barricades set up for spectators along the perimeter as well as cones 6-feet away from the barricades to guide the runners through this section.
  • After crossing the finish line, runners will be able to get a bottle of water and make their way through the finish line chute.

Arriving

  • Participants should arrive a little early to get parked (most parking will take place on the south side of City Island).
  • Participants will then take a few moments to walk to the starting line and upon arriving at the starting line, will immediately begin the course (rolling start format).

Finish Line Chute

  • Upon exiting the finish line chute, we kindly ask that participants and spectators depart City Island so we avoid having a large gathering.
  • We will have participants arriving and leaving throughout the night, so this will allow us to keep the size of the event down and also with the flow of the course.

MASKS

Participants must wear a mask up until just before they start running and must put a mask on upon exiting the finish line chute. You must maintain appropriate social distance at all times, please be aware of your surroundings.

FAQ

What is the mask policy?

It is imperative that all participants wear a face mask at all times, except while running their heat. If we work together, we can stay healthy together!

  • Participants must wear a mask up until they reach the starting line area
  • Masks can be taken off while running
  • After crossing the finish line and going through the finish line chute, masks must be put on prior to exiting the finish line chute
  • Spectators must wear masks while at the event

What should I do with my mask while running?

  • We will not have a bag drop, so please wear shorts with pockets so you can put the mask in your pocket while running and access it again prior to exiting the finish line chute

What is a rolling start?

  • A rolling start means that when you start the race as soon as you are at the starting line.
    • For example:
      • If you are in the 20-29 age group, your heat is between 6:00-6:15pm.
        • You can start the race any time during this time frame – it does not mean you start right at 6:00pm. You could start at 6:05pm, 6:07pm, etc. Once you reach the starting line, you begin right away. This helps us to avoid a large crowd standing around waiting for their heat to begin. We ask that everyone does not arrive at the starting line for their heat until their heat actually begins.
          • So if your heat begins at 6:00pm, do not arrive at 5:50pm. Just arrive at 6:00pm and be ready to start as soon as you reach the starting line.

What is the policy for spectators?

In order for us to keep crowds to a minimum and keep everyone safe, we ask that all participants limit their spectators. This way, everyone can have someone cheering them on!

  • There is going to be a lot of spectator room in the parking lot area. The final stretch of the race will take place around the perimeter of the parking lot, so there will be plenty of room for spectators!
  • We ask that spectators remain in the parking lot and do not come to the starting line. There is plenty of room in the parking lot and gives much more space to social distance.
  • Spectators must wear masks while at the event.

Can I stick around to watch the race after I finish?

  • As much as we would love to have everyone hang out and watch the race like we do every year, we need to keep our overall crowd size down. That is why we are reducing the size of participants with each heat, extending the amount of time for each heat, and offering a 3 hour 45 minute window of open time where anyone can do the race (and still qualify for age group awards!)

What do I do after I finish the race?

We’ll miss you! Once participants have finished running their heat, we ask that they exit through the finish line chute and proceed to leave City Island. This will prevent overcrowding, encourage social distancing, and make room for the next heat to have a great race!

  • After the race, we will have a finish line chute where you can get water and see some of our vendors. After exiting the finish line chute, we respectfully ask our participants to head out so we can welcome the runners for the next hear and keep our overall crowd size down.

Are awards chip-timed or gun-timed?

  • All age group awards are chip-timed.
    • This includes anyone that runs in the open time or in their age-group heat.
      • This is because we are utilizing a rolling start format and not a gun-time format like usual.
    • The only exception is the Elite Heat, which will be gun-timed.
      • The Elite Heat will be limited to 30 participants. Everyone in the Elite Heat will begin at the same time.

What do you mean by “Open Time” from 2:00-5:45pm?

  • This is a time frame where any participants (except the Elite Heat) can show up and run the race at any time.
    • This includes the Age Group Heats, the Half Pint/Fun Run, and the Corporate Challenge.
      • *The Fun Run is not a timed race so you will not see an official time in the results.
    • If anyone is participating in the Fun Run and is going to be walking in groups of more than 5 or using more than one stroller, we kindly ask that you participate in the time frame between 5:00-5:45pm. This is to make room for everyone on the course.
  • Participants can arrive, walk to the starting line, and begin the race immediately.
  • If you are running between 5:00-5:45pm, please note that this is the Fun Run and there will be kids and strollers on the course. You will have to yield to these participants and safely run around them.
  • We will have the starting line and finish line mats set up during this time.
  • All participants will get an official time and will qualify for awards (except the Fun Run, which is not officially timed).

Will there be food trucks?

  • We will not be having food trucks this year.

Will there be an awards ceremony?

  • There will not be an awards ceremony at the event.
  • All results will be updated on the results page of the Falcon Race Timing page for the Harrisburg Mile as soon as they are ready.
  • Awards will be mailed to participants following the race.
